Via acquires Citymapper in quest to be “operating system” for public mobility

Transit technology provider Via has acquired Citymapper , which provides a journey planning app for consumers. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Via says the acquisition will accelerate its vision to “build the end-to-end digital infrastructure for transit systems.”

Two years ago Via acquired mapping technology company Remix and last month it raised $110 million.

Via will integrate Citymapper’s product into its TransitTech platform.

The Citymapper app – which the company says has been used by more than 50 million people in more than 100 cities - enables users to plan a trip based on the criteria that matters most to them, such as transit mode, arrival time, cost, duration, etc. Via says the app will continue to be available to consumers, and it intends to expand the app’s reach globally.

“By bringing our teams together, we see an exciting opportunity to deliver Citymapper’s capabilities to cities and transit agencies all over the world, so that they can create the most user-friendly and relevant transit experience for their communities.”

We share this vision with Via, and through this acquisition, can expand Citymapper to a larger audience, make our technology available to cities and transit agencies and extend the positive impact on the communities we serve.”
